TIERRA TANGO featuring Katie Viqueira

Katie Viqueira is a brilliant exponent of a new generation of Argentinean Tango vocalists. Her style traces the musical roots of her native Buenos Aires in a contemporary setting. Ms. Viqueira has been hailed as a “hot tango star” and a “diva” by the Boston Globe, a recognition founded in a long and successful career that started many years ago in her hometown of Buenos Aires, Argentina. Her vast experience as a singer includes working with some of Argentina's leading pop artists, with international bands such as Air Supply, performing live in radio and TV, and touring nationally and internationally. She has worked with various Grammy® Award nominated artists--such as Pablo Zinger, Leo Sujatovich and Diego Torres--and has shared the stage with many of Piazzolla’s associates--such as the aforementioned Pablo Zinger, Pablo Ziegler and Héctor del Curto.

Her latest CD, Amores Torcidos, has won the renowned INDEPENDENT MUSIC AWARDS, in the World Music category. As a result of the IMA prize, Amores Torcidos will be exposed to more than 6 million Borders Books and Music customers. Tunes from the album will be included in a compilation, the IMA Winners CD, to be broadcast in college radio stations throughout North America. Also: ten thousand copies of that compilation will be distributed to music fans and industry movers and shakers at music conferences, festivals and other events throughout the year.

Viqueira was awarded twice in the prestigious OTI song festival (Contest of the Iberoamerican Television Organization.) Between 1994-1997 she presented in Buenos Aires with great success her musical show entitled Entre la voz y el alma. Since she moved to Boston in 1997, she has become “one of the most visible Tango singers” on the US scene (Elijah Wald, Boston Globe).

Katie Viqueira has delighted audiences in Latin America, Europe and the U.S. She has toured various US states--such as New Mexico, Tennessee, Georgia, Pennsylvania and the District of Columbia, among others--and continues to do it on a regular basis. She has performed at some of the most prestigious venues of the East Coast, such as Boston’s Regattabar and Scullers, or New York’s Brooklyn Academy of Music and the Knitting Factory. In 2002, Mrs. Viqueira premiered in the US Astor Piazzolla’s Tango-oratory PUEBLO JOVEN, in a concert held at NY’s Town Hall Theater with the Cosmopolitan Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Pablo Zinger. She has been summoned to be the lead vocalist in Piazzolla’s other best known symphonic piece, MARÍA DE BUENOS AIRES, in a performance to be held this coming April in Seatlle, WA, accompanied by the Seattle Chamber Players under the direction of maestro Zinger.

Ms. Viqueira starred in the musical show TIEMPO DE TANGO (Time of Tango) presented early this year at the New York Theatre Workshop. By popular acclaim, this musical will be relaunched starting in November, once again with Ms. Viqueira playing a starring role in its cast. During 2004 she was seen in various world class festivals. In June Ms. Viqueira opened the FESTIVAL INTERNACIONAL DE TANGO (International Festival of Tango), which this year was held in Boston, MA. In August she performed at the prestigious BELLEAYRE MUSIC FESTIVAL, in the Catskills, NY, and in September she will be performing in the world renowned WORLD MUSICAL FESTIVAL, in Chicago, IL, where she will open for Peruvian world music mega star Eva Ayllón.

She has recorded various CDs, both as soloist and as guest artist. Her first album in the US market, THE OTHER SIDE, won great acclaim by critics and the public—please see selected quotes from reviewers attached. Her upcoming CD, AMORES TORCIDOS, is scheduled to be released in the fall by the European label FreshShound Records, as part of their collection of avant garde tango, Bandoneon XXI. Her record KATIE VIQUEIRA CANTA LOS GRANDES ÉXITOS DE MARIA ELENA WALSH (Leader Music, 1997) was a best-seller, and has been reedited various times. She participated in the soundtrack of the award winning music Blue Diner (directed by Natatcha Estebanez and Jan Egleson, music by Claudio Ragazzi), and has recorded the credits of the popular TV program La Plaza (WGHB, Boston).

Katie Viqueira leads her own band, where is supported by a set of outstanding musicians—please see their bios attached. At the same time, Ms. Viqueira also works with other premiere ensembles, with which she is associated. The first is AVANTANGO, a highly successful orchestra led by Pablo Aslan, whose collective experience includes participating in Broadway hits like "Tango Argentino" and "Forever Tango," the tango projects of Yo-Yo Ma, Julio Iglesias and Shakira, and the award-winning film "Tango." The second ensemble with which Ms. Viqueira is associated is TRIÁNGULO, which features Grammy® Award nominated artists Pablo Zinger and Marco Granados, and Gustavo Tavares.
