Sumaj Chasquis
Programs Offered
Sumaj Chasquis offers a variety of programs tailored to meet the
particular needs of our presenters:
- A concert features a wide variety of Latin American
and Caribbean folkloric and dance rhythms presented in such a way that
audiences are invited to participate in a journey through all of Latin
America. Band members introduce each song, placing it in its
appropriate cultural context, often inviting audience members to clap or
sing along, mostly in Aymara though sometimes in Spanish or English.
This is usually presented in a concert hall or in fixed seating
venues.
- Our family show features song selections aimed at a
family audience, including songs and stories appropriate for children
ages 3 and up.
To this we add our cultural presentation featuring our adult
repertoire, including songs and instruments that come from the native
South Americans, the Africans and European cultures to present a well
rounded, fun and participatory presentation suitable for all ages. Our
family shows usually last 45-60 minutes.
Our FAMILY SHOW is typically 45 minutes to now hour, and explores a
variety of Latin rhythms from South America, Central America and the
Caribbean. The concert consists of up to 8 songs coupled with
explanations celebrating the roots of the music, specifically showcasing
the African, indigenous and European cultural influences. It can be
performed by a duo, trio or musicians or a sextet, budget allowing.
Time and space permitting, the artists often demonstrate how one or
two folkloric dance rhythms are traditionally danced. If the presenter
agrees, Sumaj CHASQUIS always reserves a 5-minute period just before the
last song or the children and parents to have a chance to ask questions.
By the end of the concert, if time and space allows, audience members
are invited to get up and dance to the last song.
